Eyeshield 21 (Chapters 31-34) - Review

Chapter 31
The previous year, Kurita bought 100 cream puffs to greet every newcomer. But no one came.

However, a lot of people came this time thanks to Eyeshield 21 and the win against Zokugaku! Kurita is crying for joy! And Mamori eats cream puff (her favorite food) without permission!

The team interviews everyone. They need to determine their positions. The easiest way to distinguish a person is, according to Kurita, "is he fit for offence or defence"?

According to Hiruma, you can tell which one's which from how they sit. I don't think it is true, but it is a funny beginning for interviews!

Yukimitsu Manabu's forehead is huge! He is a second year in high school, he doesn't seem very useful but he is at least determined!

Chapter 32
Komusubi wants to become Kurita's apprentice, and therefore a lineman (responsible for becoming shields for players on the team, a position focusing mostly on power)!

Of course, Kurita is happy to have another lineman in the team! And Komusubi is happy to be his disciple.

That guy is suspicious. "You have both plenty of funds and minions. I wish I can become like you." It is obvious that he wants money and slaves like Hiruma, so he wants to join the team for bad reasons.

Hiruma decides to do an entrance trial to keep only the determined people. While Mamori wished everyone would last until the very end, Kurita doesn't want anyone to leave the team like Musashi did.

And he is right to do that, as at first people thought the trial was to climb the stairs of the school to the top floor. There is really no need for people who doesn't even want to climb some floors in one go.

Komusubi and the Huh Huh Bros are rivals! The latter was invited to do the entrance test like the others.

The test is not climbing to the top of the school, but to the top of the Tokyo Tower! Hiruma managed to get the place booked for the day thanks to his scary information network. To pass the test, the applicant must climb 250 meters (around 820 feets) with at least one speck of ice left.

The test seems ridiculously hard. Monta challenged Sena to a one-on-one fight. He knows he can't beat Sena when it's ordinary sprinting. But vertically, he can beat Sena with his leaping power. They bet a week's lunch money on this. Sena accepted the challenge! Sena vs Monta!

Chapter 33
But there is also another match. Komusubi vs Huh Huh Bros!

Suspicious guy is unsurpringly an asshole and steals Yukimitsu's ice.

Fortunately Hiruma teaches those jerks a lesson. But Yukimitsu still lost his ice, that's unfair.

And the winner is... Sena! Monta was almost the winner but his last ice cube melted! Poor Monta.

I like Yukimitsu. His motivations are very relatable.

Asshole guy decides to give up like many people with no determination.

Komusubi won the match and passed the test like the Huh Huh Bros. The "Brothers" wonder why they even bothered to do the test.

Yukimitsu finally climbs up to the top of the Tower!

Although there was no ice cube left, Hiruma decided to accept Yukimitsu in his team because the latter is full of determination. There are now five new recruits: Komusubi Daikichi, Yukimitsu Manabu and the three Huh Huh Bros: Kazuki Juumonji (the one with the scar), Kouji Kuroki (the one with dark hair and fishlips), and Shozo Togano (the one with sunglasses who's always reading manga)

Chapter 34
We now have 1 manager and 9 players, which is not enough to play a match. Was it really necessary to make such a difficult entrance test? You need at least 11 players, and even more in case of exhaustion (playing both offence and defence isn't good for stamina) or injuries (like in the Zokugaku match!). Of course, Hiruma will borrow players from other clubs but still...

Komusubi speaks a language only powerful men can understand. His father is also fluent in this language but not his mother! Many other characters can speak that language, especially Mamori (cf. chapter 32) and linemen like Kurita. It is weird quirk for characters but I love it.

Monta is a monkey. Change my mind.

Surpringly the Huh Huh Bros also train hard, thanks to their rivalry with Komusubi.

Hiruma and Kurita can't play American Football for their third year in High School. WHY? Why would they join a high school without a football club and without extracurricular activities for seniors? That's a huge plothole.

Deimon now wants to watch the Ojo vs Seibu match, the final of the Tokyo Tournament.

The Zokugaku Chameleons are Hiruma's slaves, remember?

Seibu Wild Gunmen's cheerleaders are dressed like cowgirls! They are cute.

Ojo is losing the match against Seibu! Shinryuji also said that Ojo this year is weak, it seems that both Deimon and Ojo needs more training!

Kid (real name unknown) and Tetsuma are the aces of Seibu. Kid is worried that something bad would happen as things are going too well for Seibu. What is Ojo going to do against Seibu?

Interestingly enough, even parents have their own funny quirks! The characters in the series are great, they have a funny quirk but they are (most of the time) not one-dimensional as they often have some depths.

Mamori is a quarter-American. It is is maybe why she joined the American Football team, although Mamori said in this chapter that it is totally unrelated to lineage.
