Naruto (Chapters 41-45) - Review

Chapter 41
Previously in Naruto. The first part of the Chunin exam began! And Naruto is so screwed.

... What the fuck is that question? I am surprised that Sakura could solve this problem. She perfectly masters her chakra and is very intelligent, then why didn't she do anything in the previous arc?

Sakura was right. She was the only one who could solve the problem! Even Sasuke didn't understand one of these problems.

I totally understand Naruto's reactions. Exams can be stressful, especially if you can't do anything...

Sasuke understood that it wasn't a knowledge test, but a test where the examiners are watching closely if the Genins are better in gathering information without getting caught. But Sakura broke the system as she knew how to answer all the problems.

Sasuke is not the only one who understood that. Almost every other Genin knew that they should cheat. While the methods are quite clever, there is no way they were not caught by the proctors. But it was an original way to show everyone's abilities!

Kiba is using his dog, Shino his insects.

I don't know how Tenten did that, but that was amazing.

Byukugan? Sharingan? That's obvious cheating guys.

But Naruto didn't understand that he was supposed to cheat. So Hinata, being a nice girl, offered him to copy her answers.

Chapter 42

Naruto hesitated for a while, but he decided not to cheat out of fear.

Ino can possess someone for a moment, but her real body would fall asleep. That's not very convenient...

Gaara creates a third eye then he put his sand in the eyes of a candidate. Gaara can manipulate sand.

So that he can easily cheat. That's clever! Of course, the proctors saw the eye. But it is not obvious that it is Gaara's eye, so I think he was not caught.

Gaara's teammate, Kankuro, wants to go to the bathroom.

Kankuro uses a puppet that can look like a human!

Chapter 43
How can Kurenai "have no way of knowing" Ibiki? She's a ninja, she should know the other Jônin and their abilities.

Then Kiba said that there were ninja who had sat for the exam more than once. But Ibiki answered that he was making the rules this year and not the previous ones. Therefore if some people had doubt, they should give up and come back next year. Wow that's some psychological torture!

Naruto has a dilemma. If he gets the question wrong, he'll be a Genin for life, which is not acceptable. But if he rejects the question, Sasuke and Sakura will both have to suffer for his lack of guts. But Sakura won't suffer. She doesn't mind losing time as she can still reapply for the next exam. She thinks Naruto should raise his hand.

NaruSaku makes more sense than I remembered. Sakura knows that Naruto can't answer any question as he is stupid. But she also knows that Naruto won't give up. So Sakura wants to raise her hand to give Naruto a chance to become a Chuunin.

Surpringly, Naruto raised his hand!

"I'll accept your stupid question! Even if I risk ending up a rookie for the rest of my life, I'll still become Hokage. Even if I can only make it by pure stubbornness, I don't care! I'm not afraid of you!" Naruto

Thanks (partially) to Naruto's speech, 78 Genins passed the first exams!

Chapter 44
Wow like Temari says, Ibiki seems like a completely different person! Look at his smile!

Naruto was so lucky that it was not a real written exam or a cheating test.

Torture is scary, very scary. Berserk, who was full of torture scene, made me deeply afraid of it. And fuck you Dozu, don't be cocky like that.

"Learn that and learn it well. If you bring back intelligence from a suspect source or a compromised operation, you're doing your enemies' work for them, putting those you serve in danger. This is why we maneuvered you into using your espionage skills to cheat. It was the quickest way of weeding out the students whose skills aren't yet up to snuff."

That makes sense. But what about guys like Naruto who didn't solve any problem and didn't cheat? With hindsight, the best strategy was to do nothing. And I don't think that's the message here.

The tenth question was the real test of the exam. No matter how dangerous the risk, there will be missions that ninjas cannot decline. A ninja must demonstrate valor that inspires those around him, helping all to overcome their fear.

"Those who can't gamble with their own fate, who would trade today's certain risk for tomorrow's uncertain future, never taking the chance that lies before them, are weaklings who make only weak and easy decisions. In my opinion, they don't belong in the ranks of the Chûnin at all!" Ibiki

Ibiki congratulates everyone for passing the first step, then the second examination officer Anko arrives! Hmm, Anko dresses in a provocative manner, which is not really appropriate in front of minors. I understand that sex-appeal can be important for kunoichis as they can for instance seduce men, but still...

Yeah, Naruto broke the system. He didn't do jackshit but passed the first exam. I bet Ibiki didn't think anyone would do that.

Chapter 45
In Japanese culture, the number "4" is considered an unlucky number because it is pronounced as "Shi", which is also the word for "death", and so the number "44" is considered an especially ominous number. This is a fitting designation number for this particular training ground, the Forst of Death.

In the first part of the exam, Ibiki did his utmost to make people give up. So Naruto thought Anko would try the same. But Anko said that he's pretty cocky and threw a kunai at him, which is a dick move.

Well... That's kinky.

Like Naruto said later, what's up with the big freakish tongue?

That girl is fucking nuts. Before the exam, everyone has to sign a consent form, so that Anko would not be held liable for someone's death. That's horrible.

Every team are going to undergo a survival test in the Forest of Death. They can use any ninja arts or weapons at their disposal.

The second part of the exam is a fight-to-the-death version of "capture the flag". There's a "scroll of heaven" and a "scroll of earth" and the objective is to acquire both scrolls and bring them both the tower at the center.

Small reminder that most Genins we know are 12-13 years old. And they can easily die in this exam. That's cruel and inhuman.

The rules are:
1. The teams that fail to reach the tower in time as a three member cell carrying both a heaven and an earth scroll are out.
2. Under no circumstances can they leave the forest before the time is up.
3. It is forbidden to look at the contents of the scrolls until they're inside the tower!

The second part of the exam begins!
