Naruto (Chapters 64-66) - Review

Chapter 64
Previously in Naruto. Team 7 passed the second part of the exam.

If both the heaven scroll and the earth scroll are opened , a Chûnin is summoned to greet the applicants at the end of the second exam. Iruka is the messenger for Team 7.

I miss Iruka. It's nice to see him again.

Iruka then explains the Hokage's message. Chûnin are the unit commander class, responsible for leading their teams, they can only do so by a combination of intelligence and strength.

Iruka is worried about Team 7. He asks them not to overdo things.

But Naruto says he matured (which I'm not really sure it is true but whatever), and that Iruka should not worry about him.

"Well... Kakashi... It looks like it's you and not me who understands just what these kids can handle." Iruka

Orochimaru is one of the three Sannin of Konoha and one of the worst criminal (S-class renegade). For unknown reason, he was said to be dead some time ago. But he reappeared in the second part of the exam because he is interested in Sasuke and the Uchiha blood.

The Hokage decides to proceed with the preliminary rounds for the third examination while keeping a close eye on Orochimaru's movements.

Chapter 65
How many Genins can become a Chûnin with the Chûnin Exam? It seems that there are usually at best 10 new Chûnins per exam. How can each village renew their military forces? How many ninjas does Konoha have?

So far, it seems that there are not many ninjas. Only 27 students graduates from the Academy. But Kakashi said that only 9 remained a Genin, the others have to go back to the Academy. With so little Genins, it is impossible to have thousands of Chûnins and Jûnins. But hundreds of chapters, it is implied that the village has 10,000-20,000 Chûnins and Jûnins. That's a plothole. But it doesn't really matter.

Among the 21 Genins who passed the second exam, there are 15 ninjas from Konoha, 3 from Suna and 3 from Oto. There are far too many ninjas from Konoha to my mind.
And, hello Orochimaru!

I love Gai and Kakashi's friendship-rivalry. Gai is actually one of my favorite character in the series.

Among the 21 applicants who passed the second exam, there are surpringly the 9 new Genins of Konoha (Team 7, Team 8 and Team 10).

Before the third examination begins, the Third Hokage wants to explain to underlying purpose of the exam. Officially, the Exam is jointly conducted to promote friendship among allied nations and raise the level and standards in the art of the Shinobi. But the series of so-called examinations is in fact a war between all the members of the alliance.

Yeah, that makes sense. That's probably why there are not many applicants from the other villages. They want to avoid losing Genins (The Forest of Death is implied to be always the second part of the exam in Konoha) and to show the quality of their ninjas.

These exams thus provide a public arena for each country to show off and boast of the strength of its warriors and hence the strength of the country itself. Yeah but... there are only 3 villages among the 6 (Konoha, Suna, Ame, Taki, Kusa, Oto) represented here.

Gekko Hayate is the proctor of the third exam. He is a sick guy, and that's pretty much it about him.

That explanation doesn't make any sense to me. But whatever.

As the preliminaries start right now, Hayate asks if there is someone who doesn't feel up to the challenge. Naruto wants to give his best in this best because he made a pact with Kabuto. But Kabuto gives up.

Chapter 66
We all know that Kabuto is Orochimaru's spy. His explanations are of course bullshit. Naruto is heartbroken. As Kabuto saved his team, he wanted the two of them to pass the exam. But Kabuto gave up. Fortunately, Naruto didn't learn so far that Kabuto is a traitor...

Kabuto only did 2 C-ranked mission and 14 D-ranked missions? What the hell?

A part of Kabuto's backstory is revealed now. Kabuto was a boy from the enemy side who was brought back from the battle by a Jônin.

Kabuto actually gave up because he feared he would blow his cover. And because Orochimaru himself can see the fights, there is no need for him to remain there.

How the hell did nobody hear them? Yoroi said that Kabuto is Orochimaru's favorite and nobody heard that?

Look at how sad Naruto is! He believes Kabuto is a nice guy.

But Kabuto is only a traitor...

Sakura wants Sasuke to withdraw. Naruto doesn't know about the mark Orochimaru gave Sasuke. It's not very nice to keep secret like that.

But Sasuke doesn't want to give up.

Sasuke wants to continue the exam as he wants to fight against the best ninjas like Gaara, Lee, Neji and... Dosu?

At last, Sasuke acknowledges Naruto as his rival!

Anko wants to pull Sasuke out of the exam, quarantine him under the guard of black ops agents. But kaakshi says that Sasuke will not go quietly if they order that.

Okay Kakashi? You're a shit teacher. Anko knows the danger of the cursed seal as she has one, Sasuke is likely to die if he continues the exam, so it is better for his safety that he gives up. Saying that "he is Uchiha, he won't accept that" is a bullshit reason to risk his life.

The Hokage lets Sasuke continue the exam. But at least, he knows that Sasuke should be stopped if the curse mark begins to spread.

The preliminary to the third exam is simple. As there are a total of 20 combatants remaining, they will hold 10 bouts. And the victors of those bouts will advance to the third exam. Unlike the second part of the exam, they prefer to avoid deaths.

The first fight of the preliminaries is Yoroi versus Sasuke!
