Naruto (Chapters 70-73) - Review

Chapter 70
Kakashi charges a Raikiri and threatens to kill Orochimaru. But Orochimaru is only laughing.

Orochimaru knows that Kakashi's threat is meaningless. He turns his back and knows that Kakashi won't attack him. Orochimaru says that Sasuke will one day seek him out in order to become strong enough to kill Itachi.

Orochimaru is a scary villain. Even Kakashi who is established as a powerful Jûnin is afraid of him. Kakashi knows that he can't defeat Orochimaru and didn't even try to kill him.

The Aburame clan uses insects as weapons. Shino's abilities are scary and deadly. He can track people, poison people, absorb the enemies' chakra etc. His appearances, personality and abilities are fitting for an antagonist, but not really for ninja of Konoha. But if you want him as a ninja of Konoha, he could highlight a darker side of Konoha for instance. Honestly, Shino could have been a great character, but he barely appears in the manga.

Dosu explains to Kin why Zaku's arm exploded.

Dosu truly cares about his teammates. It's nice to see that he has depths.
And Kurenai is freaked out by her own student.

Next fight: Tsurugi Misumi vs Kankuro.
By the way, why do some characters not have a last name? In Kingdom, it is because some characters are historical ones and their first names or true names are unknown. But in this series? I don't know.

That power is lame, very lame. Kankuro refused to surrender so the other guy broke his neck.

But it was not the real Kankurô, only a puppet!

Kankurô switched places with his puppet and altered his puppet's appearance to resemble his!

Kankurô easily wins the fight. Even Hayate thought that Kankurô's neck was broken! I don't know how Kankurô did it, but his puppet can perfectly take his appearance.

Chapter 71
Next fight. Ino versus Sakura!

That's sexist.

Sakura was bullied when she was a child, and Ino protected her. Ino was a nice friend to Sakura.

Sakura was jealous of Ino. As a child, she already had an inferiority complex.

Sakura is provoking Ino. Naruto says that Sakura crossed the line and that Ino scared him. But Kakashi answers that "Sakura is not the kind who'd bully someone just to be cruel".Sakura wants to make sure that Ino is too riled up to think of going easy on her for old time's sake.

Sakura was jealous of Ino. She wanted to be as strong as her. And that's why they are now rivals instead of friends (you can actually be both, but Sakura is stupid and doesn't know that). It would have been better if Ino was actually a strong kunoichi...

Ino and Sakura's rivalry is similar to Naruto and Sasuke's but also Kakashi and Gai's.

Sakura claimed that she was not Ino’s little tag-along anymore and she was willing to stand up to Ino as a full-fledged shinobi. After Sakura noticed Ino had also a crush on Sasuke, she decided to compete with her, to try to be her equal.

That's cute, but it doesn't explain why Sakura is a bitch towards Ino. Sakura has no good reason to destroy her friendship with Ino. You can be rival and friend, you know?

Sakura then says that Ino should stop holding back as she knows Ino can do better than this.

Chapter 72
We already know that, but Sakura is a master of chakra manipulation.

Ino and Sakura more or less have the same level, so the fight could last forever.

Sakura is a complete hypocrite. But I think she doesn't mean that, she just wants to provoke Ino.

Ino also cuts her hair to show that like Sakura she wants to become a strong kunoichi.

Ino wants to use the Shintenshin no Jutsu but everyone thinks it is a bad idea as Sakura could easily dodge it.

Who controls Sakura body? Sakura or Ino?

Ino's technique seems to have failed as Sakura still controls her body!

But it was actually a trap! Ino is not stupid, far from it. Now Sakura can't move.

And Ino uses her Shintenshin no Jutsu to take control of Sakura's body.

Chapter 73
Volume 8 ended in chapter 72. But I decided to add chapter 73 to have the end of the fight Ino vs Sakura. Ino should have won there as she took control of Sakura and said that Sakura wished to withdraw.

Naruto cheered Sakura, and Ino started to lose control.

Inner Sakura managed to drive Ino out. I think it was supposed to be funny, but it seems like an asspull.

So there are two reasons why Ino lost control, 1. she didn't have enough chakra left, 2. Inner Sakura.

The fight has ended. Neither candidate is able to continue as a result of simultaneous knockouts. Therefore neither combatant in the fourth battle moves past the preliminary round!

The fight was way better than I remembered. Sakura had a nice character arc (but her character quickly went back to the useless Sakura) and both girls strategically use their techniques. But I don't understand why Ino didn't win when she took control of Sakura's body and made Sakura give up...

However, the fight would have been much better if Ino was a much better Kunoichi than Sakura. I mean, the point of the flashback was that Sakura was inferior to Ino and she wanted to be her equal.

Moreover, Sakura and Ino's fighting skills are not flashy. Later, Ino can use Doton and Suiton (and Katon in the anime), whereas Sakura can use Suiton and Doton (according to the Fourth Databook, she never used them in the manga). Sakura and Ino should have used an elemental jutsu. And why not some Taijutsu or Genjutsu techniques? The manga has a wide arsenal of techniques!

Kakashi is proud of his students. That's nice.
But Kakashi totally neglected Sakura's training. What did he teach her? Nothing.

Tenten versus Temari! Who is going to win?

Sakura and Ino's being friends are much more interesting to see than the two of them bickering.

Tenten was defeated offscreen by Temari.

The anime shows the fight. Poor Tenten, there was nothing she could do.
