At last, the preliminaries to the third exam are now complete!
Kabuto then complains that Orochimaru didn't tell him about Dosu, Zaku and Kin. When he was assigned to gather intelligence on Sasuke, Kabuto provoked Team Dosu but was slightly injured. But Orochimaru says that Kabuto is his right-hand man.
The final round battles will be conducted in front of everyone. Each of the finalists represents the battle strengths of their own respective lands, so the examiners want them to exhibit and fully showcase their various talents
Thus, the finals will commence one month later to give everyone equal opportunities.
Kabuto goes to Sasuke's hospital room and kills all of his Anbu bodyguards. Anbu ninjas are useless in the series.
As he holds a scalpel to Sasuke's neck, Kakashi appears and stops him.
Chapter 89
The Third Hokage assures them all that they do not need to win their matches to advance in rank, only that they prove themselves worthy of chūnin-ship.
Poor Ebisu. Dude lost against Naruto in chapter 2.
Ebisu explains that Naruto wastes too much chakra when performing jutsu, tiring him out faster and leaving his jutsu less effective. It is only because he has so much stamina/chakra that this has never been a problem.
They leave Kakashi to go train at the hot springs. After preventing Naruto from spying on the bathing women, Ebisu instructs Naruto in how to improve his chakra control by walking on water.
But, Naruto doesn't manage to walk on water and he suffers.
Previously in Naruto. Gaara wins the fight against Lee. However, everyone acknowledged Lee's abilities.
Sakura wants to go and help Lee, but Kakashi says she should not. But Kakashi didn't prevent Naruto from going to help Lee. I don't know why.
Because of the five gates and Gaara's attack, Lee may never become a ninja again... Such a sad ending for this great fight.
Gai is heartbroken by the news.
Lee risked his life to win the fight against Gaara, so that he could have the opportunity to fight Naruto, Sasuke and Neji. But he failed.
Shut up, Neji. That's very rude.
Kakashi was a dick to Gai earlier, and he apologizes. Then he tries to comfort Gai.
Dosu is an interesting antagonist. He now understands that Orochimaru only sees him and his teammates as guinea pigs and that his master is only interested in Sasuke. So he is understandbly angry at Orochimaru so he is toying with him.
As Dosu uses sound to attack without ever being in direct contact with his opponent, Choji buries his head within his body so his ears are plugged up.
Even if the enemy's ears covered, Dosu can still land an attack with his sound!
Iruka is worried about Naruto, but Konohamaru still can't sneak out.
Orochimaru and Kabuto both think that peace won't last. A new war between villages will soon begin and Orochimaru wants to be the trigger of the war.
Orochimaru wants Kabuto to kidnap Sasuke. Interestingly enough, Orochimaru fears that Naruto extinguishes Sasuke's darkness in his soul. Despite his desire to avenge his clan, Sasuke is ready to risk his life for Naruto. For instance, he saved Naruto against Haku. Will Naruto manage to soothe Sasuke's darkness? Or will Orochimaru manage to corrupt Sasuke?
"Kabuto... If you want to stop me, your only chance is to kill Sasuke now. There's no way you could kill me, eh? Even if you're strong, you're no stronger than Kakashi... Heh, I'm joking. Now, you may go! I'm putting my trust in you." Orochimaru
This is... interesting. I think Orochimaru and Kabuto still don't fully trust each other. It seems like Kishimoto wasn't certain about Kabuto's final role and motivation. Why is Kabuto loyal to Orochimaru? Is he really loyal to him?
Pretty sure that Kabuto is hyped to be equal to Kakashi there. I laugh when Kakashi says "depending on the circumstances, i'll have to arrest and interrogate you." Why would Kakashi not interrogate Kabuto?
The ANBU black ops, despite being referred to as powerful, never seem to actually do anything other than lose. Making Kabuto easily win against some ANBU is a quick way to show how dangerous he is. It is called the Whorf effect by the way.
Kakashi tries to detain Kabuto to find out about his relationship with Orochimaru. After restraining Kabuto, one of the dead Anbu gets up and flees, but not before revealing himself as the real Kabuto, Kakashi having captured a reanimated corpse that only looks like Kabuto.
Meanwhile, the first round matches of the Chūnin Exams finals are determined; Naruto will fight Neji, then Gaara versus Sasuke, then Shino against Kankurō. Shikamaru will fight Dosu, and the winner of that match will fight Temari.
Naruto needs additional training if he is going to defeat Neji. So he seeks out Kakashi. Intending to train Sasuke, Kakashi offers Ebisu as an alternative.
Chapter 90
Ebisu is said to be a better teacher than Kakashi. Kakashi is not a good teacher anyway, so I think it is true. Notice that Sakura is again totally neglected by Kakashi. Even if she is not a participant of the third part of the exam, she still needs training. One month is a lot, she can learn many things during that time! Instead, she didn't do jack shit and is still weak.
Ebisu then explains why this training will allow Naruto to better control his chakra.
Konohamaru changes his way and works hard to become the Hokage. He is inspired by Naruto.
Ebisu also acknowledges Naruto as a person rather than Kyuubi's host! Naruto is slowly being acknowledged by the whole village.
While Naruto struggles, Ebisu spots another man spying on the women. He tries to stop the man, but is knocked out by the man's toad.
And one of the fan-favorite character finally appears in the series!
